Macedonia gained its independence from Yugoslavia peacefully in 1991, however, Its neighboring country Greece objected to the new states use of Hellenic name and symbols which delayed the international recognition of the new state until 1995 when the relations between the two countries were normalized again after a 20-month embargo from the Greek side, The Republic of Macedonia was recognized as an independent state with the Capital being Skopje.
